The issues in the United Kingdom
The UK issues are covered by three case study sites: The Somerset Levels (2), Ilkley Moor (3), and the Humber Valley (4).
Other regions may be incorporated in the project if the opportunity arises. |
The three regions of focus address different aspect of peatland - and wetland heritage and access around the UK. The Somerset Levels were recently subject to significant flooding events, and brings opportunity for conflict to arise between conservation and farming needs.
Ilkey Moor is an area of upland blanket peat on the Pennine Mountain range. Contained within the moor are a wide variety of archaeological sites, though the moor has traditionally been managed for a variety of functions. How local groups value and use the moorland environment, and the archaeology contained, will be of interest to the project. The Humber Valley is an extensive wetland environment in eastern England, and faces particular issues of erosion and sediment movement. An aim of the project will be to try and understand this sediment movement, and how it may influence archaeology in the area. |
